Abstract:
This paper provides a historical point of view about the acculturation phenomenon. The Portuguese historical and cultural backgrounds were employed in order to report acculturation as a reciprocal learning process, which was regulated by motivations. The current paper provides an emic point of view, because it was presumed a lack of equivalence between the Portuguese and the Anglo-Saxon cultures regarding the acculturation construct. The Portuguese minority in Japan, during the 16th century did not prefer the integration cultural attitude regarding the Japanese majority culture. The acculturation process was antagonistic, and it was regulated by strong motivations in both cultures. However, the Portuguese minority was reporting to learn a second culture. The acculturation process was still negotiated, relative, and it was multidimensional, because the two cultures were affecting each other according to the different cultural domains, even because both cultures were displaying different attitudes accordingto their social classes.
